True learning occurs when children feel that the subject has importance to them. Origami is a great avenue to teach math and geometry. Folding 2-dimensional paper into a 3-dimensional object can help students learn concepts that might be abstract. Origami can help with spatial reasoning, sequencing, cognitive development, self-esteem, anxiety and creativity.

I was a summer exchange student in Japan in high school. Along with calligraphy, flower arranging and tea ceremony, we spent hours socializing and learning from each other while folding 1000 paper cranes and making ohashi (chopstick) holders. My favorites to teach are the sonobe fold and phizz fold. Then we put the pieces together to make cubes, octahedrons and more. The talking while folding can be very therapeutic and most enjoyable. I love to see children's faces shine with pride when their creation is finished.
